Wesley Hunt Says Paxton and Cornyn too Old for Senate

Congressman Wesley Hunt is confident in securing a position in the Senate not only because of his background, but his age.

Rep. Hunt announced his bid for candidacy in early October of this year, despite Republican Senatorial leadership backing Senator John Cornyn. According to AP News, Rep. Hunt believes that Cornyn won’t be able to win in the upcoming election.

Despite this belief, Rep. Hunt received pushback from the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), which called his bid a “vanity project” and urged voters to support incumbent Senator Cornyn instead.

In an interview with Texas Politics, Rep. Hunt expressed his strong belief in securing the position, stating why he was the better candidate in the contentious Republican primary race and that his opponents' old age should be considered when looking to the future.

“The bottom line is this. In one term from now, Ken is going to be in his seventies," Hunt added, saying that he believes that the same conversation surrounding Cornyn’s age will follow Paxton into his term if he wins.

“The Senate races is going very, very well for us, and we need to keep doing exactly what we're doing," said Rep. Hunt.

A recent poll conducted in the race ranked Rep. Hunt second to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and incumbent Senator John Cornyn. Hunt projects that the election next year will go to a runoff election. However, according to him, “it doesn’t matter,  because we’ll win regardless.”

Although Attorney General Paxton leads the field of  Republican senatorial candidates, Hunt believes he has something that his adversaries do not: time.

In response to the political feud between Attorney General Paxton and Senator incumbent Cornyn, Rep. Hunt believes that “this race should be about the people”, reiterating his sentiment of the U.S. Senate not being a “retirement community.”

Despite being dubbed as a “fake MAGA” by Senator incumbent Cornyn, Rep. Hunt has consistently backed President Trump on key issues within national politics.

When asked if he was expecting to be backed by the President, Hunt responded, “I don't speak for the White House, I don't speak for the President. It's our job to work our tails off, put ourselves in the best position, and should he choose to weigh in, I hope it to be for us.”

Lastly, he spoke on his participation in the race for a seat in the Senate over the past few months. “We are not quitting. We are not going to relent,” he said. “And I think if we work hard, show the people of  Texas who we really are, we're going to be just fine.”

Over the course of his bid for candidacy, Rep. Hunt has consistently risen in popularity. According to polling, Senator incumbent Cornyn has steadily sunk, leaving Rep. Hunt in a viable position for the Senate job.
