Over 20,000 Students Apply for Texas School Choice Voucher Program

Acting Texas Comptroller Kelly Hancock announced a strong response to the Launch of Texas's School voucher program, known as the Texas Education Freedom Accounts program (TEFA). So far, it has received more than 20,000 student applications within the first few hours of the enrollment period.

According to the Comptroller's office, nearly 8,000 applications were submitted in the first hour alone, marking one of the largest first-day showings for a school choice initiative in the nation.

"Today marks an exciting new chapter for Texas families," said Hancock. "The Texas Education Freedom Accounts Program is about one simple idea: Every child deserves an education that fits their unique needs."

The program allows families to use state education funds for approved educational expenses, giving parents broader options beyond traditional public school. Officials emphasized that applications are not processed on a first-come, first-served basis and encouraged families to take their time completing their submissions before the March 17 deadline.

"By opening the application process, we're putting parents in the driver's seat and giving them more flexibility to choose the learning environment where their child can thrive," said Hancock.

To support families through the process, the Comptroller's office has released an application checklist, a detailed step-by-step guide, and a video walkthrough to simplify enrollment. These resources aim to ensure that parents across Texas can easily navigate the application system.

"Our office is moving at business speed to deliver a user-friendly experience for every family who wants to participate," said Hancock. "We are committed to implementing this program responsibly and transparently so families across Texas can take full advantage of the opportunities ahead."

The response to the launch of the TEFA program highlights the strong demand for thousands of Texas families to have greater flexibility and choice in education for their children.
