President Donald Trump (R) has approved plans for a major energy expansion led by NextEra Energy, paving the way for up to 10 gigawatts of new natural gas-powered generation in Texas and Pennsylvania.
The announcement marks a significant step in expanding U.S. energy infrastructure, with a major portion of the development expected to take shape in Texas as demand for reliable power continues to surge.
The projects are tied to a broader $550 billion investment commitment from Japan under a U.S.-Japan trade agreement, with the energy assets expected to be jointly owned by U.S. and Japanese stakeholders and built and operated by NextEra Energy.
The expansion includes a previously disclosed Texas energy hub developed in coordination with Comstock Resources, aimed at supporting large-scale electricity demand driven by data centers, industrial growth, and advanced manufacturing.
NextEra CEO John Ketchum emphasized the urgency of expanding power generation as the U.S. economy evolves.
"America needs more power, and NextEra Energy is ready to deliver," said Ketchum. "Our hub strategy is designed to scale quickly and support rising demand while strengthening America's energy security, without increasing electricity costs for American households."
The company says the projects are structured to ensure that new electricity demand is met with new generation capacity, a move intended to prevent upward pressure on consumer energy bills while maintaining grid reliability.
Texas, already a national leader in energy production, is expected to play a central role in the expansion as population growth, electrification, and data infrastructure continue to drive record demand within the Electricity Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) Grid.
The approval also aligns with the administration's broader push for "energy dominance," prioritizing domestic production and infrastructure to strengthen national security and economic competitiveness.
With federal backing and international investment now aligned, the NextEra expansion signals a major new phase in U.S. energy development, placing Texas at the center of efforts to meet rising demand while reinforcing America's position as a global energy leader.
