Kelly Hancock out As Texas Comptroller Following Defeat in Primary

Texas Comptroller Kelly Hancock announced she is stepping down at the end of the month, shouting out Don Huffines for beating her in the primary.

Why does this matter?

Hancock resigned about a year after she assumed the position and four months before the midterm elections to fill the position in November, which will likely be filled by Don Huffines, who beat her in the primaries.

What did Hancock's resignation letter say?

"Texans deserve a Comptroller's office that moves with purpose, communicates clearly, and stewards taxpayer dollars well. I am confident agency leadership will continue serving Texans effectively and maintain continuity for the work already underway, and that the next Texas Comptroller and my former Senate colleague, Don Huffines, will build on that work," Hancock wrote.

In the letter to Gov. Greg Abbott, Hancock talks about her help steering the agency during the TEFA rollout and the successes of the program.

The program reached 100,000 students for the 2026-2027 school year, with "additional students expected to come off the waitlist in the weeks ahead".

Hancock's resignation goes into effect July 31, less than four months before the midterms determine who will fill her position.
