Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (D) has introduced legislation to improve employment opportunities for military spouses and address staffing shortages at military child care development centers.
Rep. Escobar introduced the Military Spouse Employment and Child Care Readiness Act, legislation directing the Department of Defense (DoD) to study ways to strengthen the military child care workforce while expanding employment opportunities for military spouses.
Escobar said the proposal is intended to reduce barriers that military spouses face, as they frequently relocate alongside active-duty service members.
Military families often move to new duty stations, requiring spouses to restart their careers and meet new licensing or certification requirements. At the same time, staffing shortages at military child development centers have limited the availability of child care for military families.
According to Escobar, these challenges can strain family finances and make it more difficult for servicemembers to balance military responsibilities with family needs.
