August Pfluger Critical Minerals Bill Passes U.S. House

Congressman August Pfluger's (R) bipartisan legislation to recover critical minerals from contaminated sites and waste streams passed the U.S. House of Representatives, marking his 13th bill to pass the House during the current term.

The Environmental Monitoring and Remediation Technology Assessment Initiative (EMRTAI) Authorization Act, co-led by Rep. Greg Landsman (D-OH), would direct the Environmental Protection Agency to broaden and authorize the EMRTAI program. The initiative would identify, evaluate, and support technologies that can recover critical minerals from contaminated land and waste streams.

"Today, the House took a critical step toward ending our dependence on foreign adversaries for the minerals America counts on," said Rep. Pfluger. "This legislation turns contaminated sites into strategic assets while speeding up the restoration work our communities need."

Pfluger also thanked Landsman for working with him to advance the legislation through the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Landsman said the legislation represents an investment in domestic supply chains, environmental restoration and American innovation.

"This is a big investment in American innovation, the future of our environment, and domestic supply chains," said Landsman. "We're grateful to Congressman Pfluger for his partnership in getting this done."

The legislation would expand the EPA program to examine contaminated sites and waste streams as potential sources of critical minerals while supporting technologies that could recover those resources. The approach would link environmental remediation with efforts to strengthen domestic mineral supplies.
