ERCOT Gas Generation Queue Surges 85% as Texas Data Center Demand Grows

Natural gas generation capacity in ERCOT's interconnection queue rose 85.5% over the past year, reaching 81,033.87 megawatts in September 2026, according to SEO Agency USA's analysis of public grid data.

The company's Texas Data Center Gas Watch AI agent compared ERCOT's monthly Generation Interconnection Status reports, which recorded 43,695.24 megawatts of gas capacity in September 2025. September marked the queue's first monthly decline in 12 months, falling by 670.09 megawatts.

The findings come as Texas faces growing electricity demand from data centers and other large-load projects.

ERCOT's public project list included 79,075.8 megawatts of gas capacity in September. According to the analysis, most of the remaining capacity appeared in aggregate totals for confidential early-stage studies.

The agent identified a 3,000-megawatt gas project in Fisher County that appeared on the public list in September. SEO Agency USA said the project likely moved forward from confidential study stages, as early-stage combined-cycle gas capacity declined by the same amount that month.

All 20 gas projects that changed their projected online dates pushed those dates later, the analysis found. The agent also reviewed Texas Commission on Environmental Quality gas turbine permit data, identifying 21 pending applications totaling 17,249.78 megawatts, and Public Utility Commission large-load projects.

The system uses Python to process public state data and perform calculations, while Claude drafts the brief. A checker verifies figures against source files, and a person approves the report before it reaches commercial teams.

ERCOT told the Texas Senate in July that it was tracking approximately 474 gigawatts of large loads seeking grid connections as of June, about 90% associated with data centers.
