With less than 24 hours until Election Day, Governor Greg Abbott (R-TX) is fighting to keep his seat – one that he’s held for 12 years.

Recent polling finds Gov. Abbott ahead of Democratic opponent Gina Hinojosa (D-TX) by a few points, but the governor is not yet at ease. In the final days leading up to the election, Abbott made his final pitch to voters that he’ll focus on affordability if reelected.

“My priority is to keep Texas affordable,” Abbott said at a campaign event in Midland, Texas, over the weekend.

Abbott added that Hinojosa supports raising taxes and “take more of your hard-earned money.”

“Hinojosa supports an income tax and voted 40 times to increase property taxes on hardworking Texas families,” Abbott said. “My affordability agenda will save the average family over $4,000 a year. The choice is clear – Texans can’t afford Gina Hinojosa.”

But Democrats are also not holding back in their criticism of Abbott.

“Texans have had decades to see who Greg Abbott really works for – and it’s not them,” said Jacob Long, a Texas Democratic Party spokesman. “It’s the billionaires and trillionaires of the world who get special treatment, lucrative no-bid state contracts, and tax breaks, while working families get stuck with $6 gas and four-day school weeks.”

POLITICO recently published reports from alleged Republican insiders who questioned Abbott’s political standing and his ability to help other Republicans win.

“That’s why even Greg Abbott’s fellow Republicans are openly questioning whether he’s overstayed his welcome,” Long said. “Texans deserve a governor who will put Texans first and make sure this state works for them, and that’s just what they’ll get when they elect Gina Hinojosa on Tuesday.”
