When 15-year congressional veteran Rep. Kenny Marchant (R) decided to retire from the U.S. House of Representatives, political operatives wrote off Marchant’s seat as a safe seat for Republicans.
But just as the tsunami of Progressive Democrat candidates continues to push for change in Texas, Marchant’s seat began to look as if it could become a vulnerable seat for Republicans.
Educator Candace Valenzuela (D) decided to run for the open Republican-leaning seat in North Texas, and after winning her Democratic primary race, Valenzuela and her Progressive campaign and agenda look to win the long-standing Republican congressional seat.
Valenzuela is very cautious of what she says and rarely makes public appearances, a tactic that her Republican congressional opponent Beth Van Duyne has been quick to point out, saying that Valenzuela is hiding “behind her computer screen and refuses to meet people face-to-face.”
The married mother of two small children has been endorsed by the who’s who of the Progressive Democrat movement, including President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, Sen. Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, ‘Beto’ O’Rourke, Julian Castro, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and Rep. Veronica Escobar.
Valenzuela, who supports a ban on “assault weapons” or “weapons of war” and expanding the Affordable Care Act, could face a significant challenge in courting Independent voters because of the support she has garnered from Progressive Americans, but her support for defunding police could be the one issue that crushes her congressional hopes.
Valenzuela said that upon winning the congressional seat she was running for, she would support the Justice in Policing Act of 2020, a recently passed measure that defunds local and state police departments who do not adhere or conform to the bill.
A recent Texas Tribune interview with Valenzuela depicts the continued narrative media outlets are pushing for Progressive candidates across the nation. The interview was nothing more than a fluff piece for Valenzuela and failed to outline her Progressive leanings and the positions we just mentioned.
The tribune story did outline Van Duyne’s “Tea Party” leanings and “vehement calls to curb illegal immigration,” adding that the former Trump administration official had “branded” herself as being a member of the “conservative squad.”
Valenzuela has been endorsed by Rep. Ayanna Presley, a member of the Progressive and Democrat Socialist “Squad” in the House.
An August poll conducted by the Democrat House Majority PAC showed Valenzuela leading Van Duyne by 7 percentage points, but over the past month or so, President Trump and Republicans have been surging as a result of the defund police movement, a movement that Valenzuela is supportive of.
