The U.S. House of Representatives recently voted in support of the Born Alive Act. House Democrats have voted to reject the bill, and earlier last, Florida Rep. Maxwell Frost called the bill an effort for Republicans to “virtue signal.”
In an interview with Texas Politics, Texas Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D) discussed the bill, chastising Republicans for supporting it. Rep. Jackson Lee called the Born Alive Act an “extremist policy.”
Leading up to the time of voting, House Republicans praised the Born Alive Act, decrying Democrats that opposed the bill.
Texas Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R) took to social media to support the bill, questioning why Democrats wouldn’t join in supporting the bill.
“The Born Alive Act protects babies born alive after an attempted abortion,” shared Rep. Crenshaw, adding that it would be “required for health care workers to give survivors the same medical care as any other baby in order to save the child’s life.”
In an interview with Texas Politics, Rep. Jackson Lee shared her thoughts on the bill, asserting that “there’s no one in this Congress that’s a Democrat or Republican that adheres to killing a baby."
She referred to a bipartisan bill that was passed in 2002, which protects "babies from medical negligence and potential killing in birth."
"I will not tramp on the rights of women and adhere to extremist policies and to criminalize a medical need across this land, and so I cannot support this legislation," Rep. Jackson lee commented, adding that she did however support the legislation that was already passed in 2002, which "protects these families."
In his comments, Rep. Crenshaw thanked Texas Rep. Henry Cuellar (D) for voting in support of the bill.
"It is utterly non-controversial to every normal person, but a hard NO from nearly every Democrat in Congress. That’s crazy. The Democrats are far too extreme on this issue and NOT in line with the American people. At all," he commented on social media.
