Texas politicians Commemorate 79th Anniversary of D-Day

Politicians disagree on many things. However, remembering the efforts of WWII American soldiers is something they can agree on. Texas politicians across the state commemorated the 79th anniversary of D-Day, in which several veterans lost their lives defending their country.

According to the Eisenhower Presidential Library, “The D-Day operation of June 6, 1944, brought together the land, air, and sea forces of the allied armies in what became known as the largest amphibious invasion in military history. The operation, given the codename OVERLORD, delivered five naval assault divisions to the beaches of Normandy, France.”

Texas Representative Vicente Gonzalez (D) took to Twitter to commemorate both the soldiers who survived as well as those who lost their lives in battle.

“79 years ago 24,000 American, British & Canadian troops stormed the beaches of Normandy, paving the way to victory in WWII. On the anniversary of D-Day, we remember these brave service members who took part in this historic invasion and honor those who did not return home.”

Texas Representative Wesley Hunt (R) shared his knowledge of the day while explaining its history.

“On June 6, 1944, Allied forces invaded Normandy in an effort to liberate Western Europe from Nazi Germany's occupation. The operation involved 156,000 American, British and Canadian troops who were transported by over 5,000 ships and landing craft to five different beaches on the coast of Normandy.”

“D-Day marked the beginning of the end of World War II in Europe. The successful landings provided a foothold for the Allied forces to begin pushing into France and eventually Germany, ultimately leading to Germany's surrender and the end of the war.”

“The Normandy landings remain significant as they represented a heroic and costly battle that many soldiers fought and lost their lives in. The bravery and sacrifice shown by these soldiers cannot be forgotten for it is the ultimate example of the price paid in blood to preserve freedom.”

“D-Day is a symbol of the America Spirit Fire.  For the United States and its allies, it was one of our finest moments.  God Bless the souls who paid the ultimate sacrifice to end Hitler’s scourge of terror and to preserve Freedom for generations worldwide.”

Texas State Senator Roland Gutierrez (D) kept his statement brief as he remembered the soldiers who fought on D-Day.

“On D-Day, we honor the selfless bravery and unwavering resolve of our veterans who stormed the beaches of Normandy. When the world needed them most, they were there. Their sacrifices echo through to today, reminding us of the true meaning of courage.  #DDayRemembrance"

Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) quoted President Eisenhower (R)  as he commemorated the many soldiers who fought for their country.

“'The eyes of the world are upon you. The hope and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you.' - General Eisenhower's Order of the Day; [June 6, 1944.] Today, we remember brave Allied troops who landed on the beaches of Normandy to liberate Europe from tyranny.”

Texas Representative Sylvia Garcia (D) focused on the soldiers' fight to defend liberty.

“Today we honor the 79th anniversary of the Allied invasion of Normandy. We remember the heroes of D-Day and their sacrifice in defense of freedom.”

Texas Representative Veronica Escobar (D) brought a local and personal perspective to her commemoration, referencing the soldiers from her hometown who fought on D-Day.

“Today marks the 79th anniversary of D-Day, a key moment in history when brave soldiers, including El Pasoans, stormed the beaches of Normandy. We honor their courage and the values they fought to preserve. Let us remember these heroes and their sacrifices in defense of freedom.”

In other news, Gov. Abbott recently issued a statement discussing the Texas House of Representatives passing HB 1/HJR 1 for substantial property tax cuts as part of the recently announced special session #1 agenda.

“Today, the Texas House passed HB 1/HJR 1 for substantial property tax cuts. It provides more property tax cuts than any other proposal at this time,” said Gov. Abbott.

The Texas Governor pointed to the fact that the new legislation is backed by multiple businesses in the state.

“Over 30 homeowner, consumer, and business groups across Texas support it. I look forward to signing it when it reaches my desk.”
