Escobar Calls for SCOTUS Reform Over Alito Allegations

Texas Representative Veronica Escobar (D) called for reform in the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) amidst criticism against Justice Samuel Alito (R).

“The American public is exhausted - and frankly, betrayed - by these revelations that Justices Alito and Thomas have been ruling in cases involving their ultra-wealthy friends,” said Rep. Escobar.

“Clearly - letting SCOTUS police themselves is not working. We need drastic reform now.”

Like Justice Clarence Thomas (R), Alito has come under scrutiny by the American public. Much of the criticism comes from various gifts and trips the two judges have accepted from wealthy individuals.

The actions of the justices created a violation of U.S. law that requires Supreme Court judges to disclose certain gifts that they receive.

Alito’s acceptance of gifts and his luxury trip with billionaire Paul Singer has gained more criticism due to the billionaire’s hedge fund’s appearance before the court in 2014.

For his part, Alito has denied knowledge of Singer’s ties to the hedge fund.

Thomas has similarly received a lot of criticism for accepting several gifts such as yacht trips, tuition payments for relatives, and various other luxury trips from Harlan Crow.

Recently, Escobar highlighted the importance of the upcoming Farm Bill.

The Texas congresswoman discussed how the bill could have an effect on community-focused organizations that serve free or low-priced food.

“With the upcoming Farm Bill just around the corner, this legislation will have major impacts on organizations like @eptruefood,” said Rep. Escobar.

“In addition to discussing their legislative priorities, I had a wonderful morning touring the newly opened Spoon Flower Grocery store today.”

The upcoming Farm Bill addresses five key areas including food security, jobs, conservation, risk management and hunger.

The Farm Bill hasn’t been updated since 2018. In the upcoming update to the bill, its supporters hope to increase baseline funding commitments to farm programs; maintain a unified farm bill that includes nutrition programs and farm programs together; and prioritize funding for risk management tools that include both federal crop insurance and commodity programs.
