Senator Ted Cruz
It has been one year since the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) overturned Roe v Wade. To commemorate the anniversary of the ruling, Texas lawmakers took to Twitter to share their thoughts.
In her statement, Texas Representative and “Pro-Choice Caucus” member Sylvia Garcia (D) contrasted the decisions of voters with the House GOP.
“Today marks one year since #RoevWade fell. Let’s be clear: abortion is health care, and your health care decisions are just that. Yours. As a proud @ProChoiceCaucus Member, today and every day, #ITrustYOU, NOT the House GOP, to make decisions about your life, health, and body.”
Texas Representative Joaquin Castro (D) remembered the overturning of Roe v Wade, while also informing voters of his attempts to restore abortion access.
“One year ago, the Supreme Court stripped Texans of the freedom to make deeply personal decisions about abortion and starting a family. This week, I signed a petition to override Republican obstruction and let Congress vote to restore access to abortion nationwide.”
Texas Representative Veronica Escobar (D) used a familiar argument by those who are for abortion. Rep. Escobar stated that future generations would not have the same “rights” as their parents.
“A year ago tomorrow, the Supreme Court ruled that generations that follow ours will have fewer rights than we had. Now, more than 36 million Americans live in states that ban or severely restrict reproductive rights, emboldened by a Court in the pockets of billionaires.”
“Extreme abortion bans have only reinforced my commitment to protecting reproductive freedom across the country. I'm a proud co-lead of the #WomensHealthProtectionAct and the #AbortionJusticeAct that would stop politicians from controlling your decisions.”
“As a @ProChoiceCaucus Member, I will never stop fighting until we safeguard abortion rights for all. I trust women to make decisions about their own bodies. I will never stop fighting for your right to choose.”
Texas Representative Chip Roy (R) celebrated the ruling, commenting that the overturning was something deemed unlikely prior to it being passed.
“They said Roe v. Wade would not be overturned in our lifetime – if ever. But 365 days ago, these skeptics were proven wrong. Overturning Roe was not the end of the fight – it only opened the door to greater opportunities to protect babies. #DobbsAnniversary"
Texas Senator Ted Cruz (R) also celebrated the ruling, emphasizing how the ruling was tied to the value of life.
“One year ago today, millions of Americans who value the sanctity of life rejoiced after the Supreme Court rightfully returned the power to make abortion laws to the states.”
Sen. Cruz discussed the potential human beings that will be born as a result of the ruling.
“Tens of thousands of precious lives have been saved as a result of this historic decision—a number that will continue to grow exponentially in the years to come.”
The Texas lawmaker ended his statement, saying how thankful he was for those who pushed for the legislation to be overturned.
“I am forever grateful for the passion & dedication of the countless advocates who fought for decades to protect the lives of the unborn.”
In other news, Rep. Garcia expressed her approval of the Federal Railroad Administration’s (FRA) recent funding for the city of Houston.
“Stalled-out trains have plagued our community for too long. Today we celebrate the @USDOTFRA's recent funding to reduce train blockages in the Houston area. These essential funds are the first steps to improving safety in our communities,” said Rep. Garcia.
The funding is to go towards the prevention of blocked roads in Houston. According to the FRA, Texas ranks third in train blockages.
“I rise today to celebrate the Federal Railroad Administration’s recent funding to reduce train blockages in the Houston area. $36 million will go to overpasses where trains block roads, intersections and crossings in the Houston area.”
