The rivalry between Texas Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R) and Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador continues to ignite the American political sphere. With months of back and forth between the two, Crenshaw argues that it’s disappointing to hear President Obrador's criticism.
During an interview with Noticias Telemundo, the bilingual Rep. Crenshaw shared that he was disappointed in the “fury” that President Obrador showed in criticizing him over border protection legislation he filed.
The rivalry began when he and Florida Rep. Mike Waltz (R) introduced legislation that would allow the United States to use the American military to address concerns with drug cartels. The effort is the latest move from Republicans as they seek to curb the rise in fentanyl and the threat that the drug cartels pose.
According to Noticias Telemundo, around 70,000 lives are lost a year due to the uptick of drugs that are being trafficked across the border.
This is something that lawmakers have moved quickly to try to address.
In responding to President Obrador's criticism of Crenshaw and Republicans, Crenshaw expressed that Mexico is “fighting a war, and they’re losing their people… I want him to ask us for help. We can help them if he lets us.”
Obrador also raised concerns when he threatened to interfere in the upcoming 2024 election, arguing that he would make sure that Republicans didn’t win.
The move to use the military against the drug cartels has been co-signed by several lawmakers including President Donald Trump (R), who’s currently leading in the polls.
Earlier this month, Crenshaw was tapped to lead a task force that would combat Mexican drug cartels.
According to Crenshaw, the task force will be “focused on neutralizing the Mexican drug cartels” because “the cartels have operational control over our southern border, facilitate and take advantage of our immigration crisis, and are killing tens of thousands of Americans every year with fentanyl.”
