Gov. Abbott Announces $2.8 million in JET Grants

In a statement, Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) shared the awarding of $2.8 million in Jobs and Education for Texas (JET) grants.

“The Texas of tomorrow depends on providing career training opportunities to hardworking Texas students as they pursue in-demand jobs,” said Gov. Abbott.

The grants are going to five Southeast Texas schools and will be presented by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC).

“Thanks to the Texas Workforce Commission and our educational partners, Texas students can thrive in good-paying careers that also bolster our state's continued economic growth and job creation. Working together, we will ensure Texas' future remains bright and full of opportunity.”

According to the statement, the grants will help the schools purchase and install equipment to initially train more than 890 students for high-demand occupations.

“As more businesses move into Texas, TWC is continuing efforts with our partners to train the workforce in high-demand areas to promote continued economic growth,” said TWC Chairman Bryan Daniel.

There were a total of nine JET grants that went to Angelina College, Coldspring-Oakhurst Consolidated Independent School District (ISD), Diboll ISD, Nacogdoches ISD and Windham School District.

Of the five schools, Diboll received the most money totaling over one million dollars.

“The work of these five schools using JET grants will help ensure Texas has the skilled workers we need,” said Daniel.

Chairman Daniel presented the awards at a ceremony attended by state and local officials, school staff, and CTE students at Angelina College in Lufkin.

In other news, Texas Representative Veronica Escobar (D) recently explained the Biden-Harris administration’s request for more funding to support Ukraine and the U.S.-Mexico Southern border.

According to the White House’s statement, much of the funding for Ukraine has been exhausted. Rep. Escobar highlighted this fact, while also detailing the need for more support at the border.

“In addition to funding for Ukraine, the supplemental aid request from the @WhiteHouse includes $4.5 billion for much-needed support at our southern border. While Republicans parachute into the border with their bullet-proof vests, @POTUS is working on real solutions.”

Much of the requested funding will go towards countering drug trafficking as well as bolstering border security.
