Former attorney to former president Donald Trump (R), Michael Cohen, has begun to testify against Trump in his civil fraud trial. Trump is being accused of falsifying his net worth to several individuals including potential investors and profitable corporations.
Over the years, Trump has been known to share his fluctuating billionaire status. However, it is been revealed that the specific amount of money that Trump holds in assets has been subject to change depending on how he attempted to represent himself.
On Oct. 24, Cohen testified that the former president would deny having a $4.5 billion net worth and claim that his net worth was closer to $6 billion. These numbers were allegedly drawn from “comparables” in which Trump based his property values on the value of other—allegedly more expensive—properties.
Trump was stated to be very upset with Cohen during the trial. He is noted as crossing his arms, “leaning forward”, and becoming red in color.
Cohen served prison time in 2018 for tax evasion and for his role in the paying of hush money to a pornographic video actress. He is expected back in court as part of the plea deal he received earlier in relation to the previous cases.
In other news, Speaker pro tempore Patrick McHenry (R-NC) has threatened to resign from his position on the basis that his responsibilities could be increased without a corresponding increase in power.
The speaker pro tempore’s comments are stated to be based on his disapproval of anything he deems as being unconstitutional.
Rep. McHenry has not made any real moves that would suggest that he wants to be the Speaker of the House, which makes the requests more questionable.
Why would he take more responsibility for a position that he doesn’t want?
Well, the government needs to be able to continue, despite Representative Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) ousting. Furthermore, Congress has struggled to bring votes to the floor to pass new legislation.
