Texas Representative Veronica Escobar (D) addressed the issues at the border while decrying Republican talking points regarding Democrats’ stance on immigration.
“There is no domestic issue more challenging for our country today than immigration, and there is no doubt that we must urgently address the issues at the border. But the Senate's secret talks that focus only on the border and not our broken immigration system are short-sighted,” tweeted Escobar.

The El Paso congresswoman highlighted three possible ways GOP congress members might try to negotiate on border issues. Furthermore, the Texas representative stated that their tactics could be harmful to migrants.
“We don't know the specifics behind the "compromise," but here's what they might be and what the consequences are:
1. Rapid expulsion: these policies help fuel more human trafficking (making it more lucrative for cartels) by sending migrants to more desolate and isolated areas.”

“2. Asylum caps: It's true that our asylum system has been over-loaded, but the answer isn't to erode it. The answer is to create new legal pathways. We have 8 million unfilled jobs, an aging and (not growing) population and workforce. Save asylum by increasing Visa caps.”

“3. Detention for migrants: Trump tried this and the system collapsed. Not only was it expensive to detain all migrants, but the conditions were horribly inhumane, and there weren't enough beds for the "crime" that vulnerable migrants committed, which was crossing the border.”

Rep. Escobar asked the Senate to work on the immigration system so that migrants could properly be addressed.
“To Senate colleagues: I could provide more context for every bad border policy attempted to date. So instead of terrible "bandaids" or recycling bad policy that provided terrible consequences and didn't deter migration, how about we try to fix the outdated immigration system?”

“Bipartisan compromise and collaboration on comprehensive immigration reform, including border security, is possible. My colleague @RepMariaSalazar and I filed the Dignity Act of 2023, with real solutions that will grow our economy and reform our broken immigration system.”
