Texas Lawmakers say Rep. Eddie Johnson was a 'Groundbreaking Hero'

Texas lawmakers throughout the state released a statement regarding the news of former Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson’s passing at age 88.

The lawmakers highlighted how much of a trailblazer Johnson was in the statement.

“Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson was one of the most influential members of the Texas delegation since she arrived in Congress in 1993.

“She made history and she delivered for our great state in ways that will be felt for generations to come – from her role on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to her leadership chairing the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology.

The former representative was the first black woman from Dallas to be elected to public office. Moreover, she was the first woman to ever lead a major Texas House committee.

“Every one of us at some point sought her invaluable counsel, her perspective and her wisdom on legislation and matters shaping our state,” wrote the lawmakers.

“Congresswoman Johnson will be missed, and we all send our deepest condolences to her family and friends.”

Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (D) tweeted an additional statement expressing her appreciation for the Labor Committee Leader.

“I join the chorus of those celebrating the life and legacy of trailblazing leader and extraordinary American, former Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson. I’m so fortunate to have served alongside her and send her family my condolences,” stated Rep. Escobar.

Texas Representative Joaquin Castro (D) detailed some of his experiences with the former representative.

“Very sad to learn of the passing of Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson. We served together in the House for 10 years, and it was a privilege to learn from her. Congresswoman Johnson was a groundbreaking hero and a powerful voice for Dallas + Texas. She will be terribly missed.”

The former congresswoman fought for civil rights throughout her political career. Johnson was known for all of her work in the community as she strived to help underserved groups in the state of Texas and America.
