Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) shared his statement regarding New York Mayor Eric Adams’s (D) announcement that he has filed a lawsuit against the bus companies that the governor used to send migrants to New York.
“This lawsuit is baseless and deserves to be sanctioned. It's clear that Mayor Adams knows nothing about the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution, or about the constitutional right to travel that has been recognized by the U.S. Supreme Court,” wrote Gov. Abbott in the statement.
The Texas governor claimed that all the migrants knowingly took the trips. However, many believe that the tactic used by Gov. Abbott is still unconstitutional.
“Every migrant bused or flown to New York City did so voluntarily, after having been authorized by the Biden Administration to remain in the United States. As such, they have constitutional authority to travel across the country that Mayor Adams is interfering with. If the Mayor persists in this lawsuit, he may be held legally accountable for his violations.”
Gov. Abbott has faced similar criticisms from several Democratic lawmakers for his use of busing. According to Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, several migrants arrived in the Illinois city after 1 a.m. from San Antonio, TX. The 350 migrants were then put on buses and taken to various Chicago suburbs. Johnson stated that the asylum seekers were left to navigate the suburbs without any guidance or specific place to go.
One of the Chicago lawmaker's main problems with Gov. Abbott's antics was the fact that taxpayers had to pay for the flights which were on private planes.
Gov. Abbott has repeatedly not backed down from the use of his controversial tactic. Despite some claiming that his busing is a political and inhumane stunt, the Texas governor released the following statement.
“Texas has transported over 95,000 migrants to sanctuary cities. Sanctuary cities like NYC & Chicago have seen only a FRACTION of what overwhelmed Texas border towns face daily. We will continue our transportation mission until Biden reverses course on his open border policies,” tweeted Gov. Abbott.
