The Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a motion to the Supreme Court to grant federal agents access to the property along the border seized by the Abbott administration. This request comes after three migrants drowned in the river near Shelby Park in Eagle Pass, TX.
Prior to the drownings, President Joe Biden requested the Supreme Court to step in and address the actions of the Texas governor. Since the drownings, several lawmakers have made statements condemning the actions of the Texas Military Department.
“Border Patrol attempted to contact the Texas Military Department, the Texas National Guard, and DPS Command Post by telephone to relay the information, but were unsuccessful. Border Patrol agents then made physical contact with the Texas Military Department and the Texas National Guard at the Shelby Park Entrance Gate and verbally relayed the information,” said Texas Representative Henry Cuellar (D).
“However, Texas Military Department soldiers stated they would not grant access to the migrants - even in the event of an emergency - and that they would send a soldier to investigate the situation. Earlier today, Saturday, January 13, 2024, the three migrant bodies were recovered by Mexican authorities.”
“This is a tragedy, and the State bears responsibility,” stated Rep. Cuellar regarding the migrants' death.
Texas Representative Sylvia Garcia (D) tore into Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) in a statement she shared on social media.
“The murderous reign of Abbott and Operation Lone Star must come to an end. I am horrified and disgusted at the tragedy that took place last night in the waters of the Rio Grande near Shelby Park in Eagle Pass. I am livid and I want justice for this family.”
Texas Representative Vicente Gonzalez (D) shared similar statements to Rep. Escobar.
“How many lives will it take for Governor Abbott to stop his political games? The Governor continues his racist mission of death and destruction along the Southern Border. This must end,” said the congressman.
