Texas politics is not for the faint of heart, and the battle for Congressional District 23 is proving to be one heck of a rodeo as Rep. Tony Gonzales and Brandon Herrera are duking it out for the Republican nomination.
Incumbent Rep. Gonzales fired the first shot with a campaign advertisement released last week defining Brandon Herrera as a fraud from North Carolina. The advertisement pulls no punches, claiming: “Brandon Herrera may talk tough but Texans know a fake when we see one. Herrera is not one of us. He’s not from here. Lived and voted in North Carolina his whole life.”

On Monday, in response to the campaign advertisement, Brandon Herrera commented on X that “the state of Texas was built by a lot of ‘east coast fakes.’”
Herrera’s response showcases a possible deficiency in his campaign – the fact that he’s a born and raised North Carolinian with little connection to the district he is vying to represent. Does Herrera really get Texas?
Texas history is taught throughout grade school, but past and current curriculum doesn’t appear teach that East Coasters built the Lone Star state.
Herrera’s remarks may not play well in a state with a proud heritage and Herrera's status as a political nomad could prove to be a detriment as the campaign unfolds.

Texas’ 23rd Congressional District is big, and the argument can be made that it needs a representative from the region to effectively represent its interests.
The Republican Runoff for Congressional District 23 will take place on May 28th.
