Weber Supports Donalds' CAMPUS Act, Aims to Protect Jewish Students on Campus

Representative Byron Donalds (R-FL) recently introduced House Resolution 1239, also known as the Condemning the Anti-Semitic Movement Pushed Upon our Students (CAMPUS) Act to the United States Congress. The resolution argues that according to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, higher educational institutions should be stripped of their funding if they are allowing any discrimination on the basis of race, color, natural origin, etc. Rep. Donalds provided a statement regarding his resolution which garnered the support of Representatives Randy Weber (R-TX) and Cory Mills (R-FL).

“The vile scourge of anti-Semitism that has swept across our nation’s campuses is unacceptable and must be strongly condemned,” said Rep. Donalds. “Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 clearly prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, and national origin, and any American institutions of higher learning that refuse to comply with this federal statute should be stripped of their funding. Protecting the rights of all Americans is not up for debate. It is our duty."

Additionally, Rep. Weber released a statement regarding his support of the bill.

“Anti-Semitism has NO place in America or on College Campuses. PERIOD. Glad to join you in this effort,” said Rep. Weber.

Furthermore, Donalds spoke publicly regarding his decision to move forward with the resolution.

“My office, we filed a resolution Friday that would defund universities and colleges if they did not protect Semitic students, “said Donalds. “We filed it on Friday, we have a bunch of co-sponsors of members of the House. We’re going to be pushing for the leadership to bring that to the floor for a vote because under the ’64 Civil Rights Act, Article VI if an institution of higher learning does not protect civil rights, then under federal law, they’re not supposed to be receiving federal funding. This is not hard stuff.”

The Florida congressman went on to mention, “People would say well why are you doing that now? It’s been the law since 1964, the reason why it was put in is because what was happening to Black students trying to go to colleges and universities in the southern states. And so when they passed the Civil Rights Act of ’64, what they said was, if you do not protect the civil rights of students, we will strip you of your funding. And a funny thing happens when you take people’s money away. They respond.

“And my attitude is, if it was good enough in ’64, why is it not applicable today?” concluded Donalds.

The CAMPUS Act is the 80th piece of legislation brought forth by Rep. Donalds during the 118th Congress.
