Rep. Chip Roy
The 2024 presidential election has seen a number of lawmakers and political figures endorse candidates from across the aisle. Former Wisconsin Rep. Liz Cheney (R) and her father, Vice President Dick Cheney (R), have both endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris (D) for the presidency. In contrast, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. (I) and former Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (R) have both endorsed President Donald Trump (R). Responding to criticism about Republicans embracing the likes of RFK Jr., Texas Rep. Chip Roy (R) is coming to his defense.
Critics are casting doubt at Republicans who are embracing RFK Jr. in the 2024 presidential election. The former presidential candidate, who shared earlier this year that he and President Trump have found some common ground in their views, has amassed controversy over some of his political stances.
Confronting criticism over RFK Jr's views on vaccines, Rep. Roy recounted his previous battle with cancer, noting that it has given him a nuanced perspective to both trust the scientific process while also questioning "government bureaucrats."
"Here’s the thing. Having had cancer - I don’t know why. Could be genetics. Could be crap I ate. Could be bad luck. Could be environment," he posited. "What I do know is that we are increasingly an unhealthy people - obesity, cancers in young people, anxiety, & many other issues - all way up," he added.
In reference to "government bureaucrats," the Texas Republicans expressed that "the scientists and experts I am supposed to trust are often massively conflicted and that the corporations making hundreds of billions of dollars in the process do not have my best interest at heart." According to him, herein lies the issue with figures like Dr. Anthony Fauci.
"I know that I was told by Fauci and all the so-called experts to “trust” the COVID shot and told I couldn’t be immune from having had it already, which is utter nonsense and led to countless hard-working Americans losing their jobs and worse," Rep. Roy further expressed. "I don't trust those institutions any longer because we've been sold BS for so long - from COVID to 'food pyramids.'"
In his assessment, he pointed out that the division we experience today is because of "both democrats AND many of the same pathetic Republicans who have sold out our country for decades."
With a candidate like President Trump, Rep. Roy sees someone who is bringing together individuals from different sides of the political spectrum for a common goal, citing RFK Jr. and Rep. Gabbard, who announced last month that she was leaving the Democratic Party and registering as a Republican.
"I am happy to have people like them willing to frigging question the conventional wisdom of all the people & “experts” who have been in charge while I watch so many aspects of our lives get worse by the minute, including and especially our health," he concluded.
