Governor Greg Abbott (R-TX) activated state emergency response resources yesterday in anticipation of the severe weather that hit the eastern portion of the Lone Star State.
Gov. Abbott called on the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) in preparation for the severe weather as flooding and search and rescue efforts were anticipated before the storms.
"Texas is prepared to deploy all necessary resources to help local officials respond to severe weather threats," said Gov. Abbott. “As Texans and out-of-state visitors begin traveling after the Christmas holiday, it’s crucial that everyone regularly monitor road conditions, make an emergency plan, and heed the guidance of state and local officials. I thank all the emergency response personnel for their work this holiday week as they help their fellow Texans during these storms.”
Moreover, the National Weather Service severe thunderstorms were expected to develop across portions of North, Central, East, and Southeast Texas on the 26th. Risks of severe weather include forms of precipitation such as "large hail, damaging winds, possible tornadoes, and heavy rainfall resulting in flash flooding" as well as "Minor river flooding is possible over the next several days, with the threat subsiding early next week."
TDEM, led by Gov. Abbott, activated the following state emergency response resources to support local emergency operations, according to the Office of the Governor's press release:
- Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (Texas A&M Task Force 1): Swiftwater Rescue Boat Squads to assist with flood rescues
Additionally, the Governor directed TDEM to place the following resources on standby for activation if needed:
- Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (Texas A&M Task Force 1 and Texas Task Force 2): Type 3 Urban Search and Rescue Teams
- Texas Department of State Health Services (Texas Emergency Medical Task Force): Severe Weather Packages
