The Texas House is in a whirlwind as Republicans look for a new speaker of the house. A recent poll signaled that Texas Rep. Dustin Burrows (R) is facing a staggering approval rating in his own district.
The race for Texas’ speaker of the house has turned more contentious than GOP members expected it to be. Texas Rep. David Cook (R) is still seen as a frontrunner in the two-man race, but Republicans are growing aggressive behind the scenes to gain power in the house.
Rep. Cody Harris (R) filed a complaint against Texas Republican Party Chair Abraham George (R), alleging that he illegally threatened and intimidated lawmakers who are not supporting Rep. Cook for House speaker. Rep. Harris believes that Chair George has violated numerous ethics rules like bribery by threatening to send mailers or censure lawmakers who support Rep. Burrows for speaker.

Rep. Burrows argues that he has enough support to take the speakership from Rep. Cook, but many accuse him of bluffing.
A new poll indicates that Rep. Burrows is not as popular in his district as he would have you believe.
The poll, which was commissioned by Texans United for a Conservative Majority, shows that Rep. Burrows is facing staggering support in his district. Only 31% of likely Republican primary voters support Rep. Burrows, and 37% disapprove of him.
57% of those polled said that they would vote for a conservative alternative to Rep. Burrows after uncovering that he plans to sway Democrat voters to take the speakership from Rep. Cook.
“The data is clear. Conservative voters don’t appreciate Burrows attempting to circumvent the House Republican Caucus and disapprove of his running to House Democrats for support,” Chad Shoemake, the treasurer of Texans United for a Conservative Majority, said in a statement.
“The average Republican voter is really waking up to the importance of a Republican speaker elected by Republicans. We challenge Dustin Burrows’ team to produce a poll showing different numbers. We aren’t holding our breath.”
