Luttrell Looks to Bolster U.S. Hypersonic Capabilities Against Existing Chinese Threat

In an exclusive interview with Texas Politics, Texas Rep. Morgan Luttrell (R) warned that China and Russia pose a dire threat with their hypersonic capabilities. The Texas congressman is focused on strengthening the United States' hypersonic efforts.

Both China and Russia continue to advance their hypersonic weapon systems, and the United States finds itself at a significant disadvantage in this critical area of military technology.

Hypersonic missiles are estimated to travel at great speeds while having maneuverable flight paths, and they pose a severe challenge to existing missile defense systems. Because of this, Rep. Luttrell, who is a former Navy Seal, is prioritizing efforts to bolster the United States' hypersonic capabilities, highlighting the dangers posed by lagging behind the country's adversaries.

"China and Russia have hypersonic capabilities. We do not. And the reason why that’s terrifying is hypersonic capabilities is a speed ratio," he explained. "The nuclear assault coming over the north part of the planet - we have defensive postures to prevent that if China or Russia fires anything at us. What we don’t have is defensive posturing on the southern part of the globe."

The United States' military’s inability to counter hypersonic threats has sparked growing concerns among lawmakers like Rep. Luttrell. Serving on the House Armed Services Committee, he is working to address this shortfall by focusing on innovative solutions.

"With the Department of Defense, for House Armed Services, I’m focusing on artificial intelligence, the special operations community, and hypersonics. It’s kinda like my babies," Rep. Luttrell explained. He emphasized the importance of long-term planning to anticipate and counter threats from the likes of Russia and China, adding, "Nothing that we own can catch a hypersonic rocket. That’s bad."

Given that the United States' current defense systems cannot intercept hypersonic weapons, adversaries could exploit vulnerabilities in the southern hemisphere. Therefore, Rep. Luttrell is sounding the alarm on strengthening the country's hypersonic capabilities for national security reasons.
