The Trump-era tax cuts are nearing their expiration, and the question lingers on how Republicans should address the tax cuts. Republicans like Texas Rep. Morgan Luttrell (R) believe that the Trump-era tax cuts should not only be made permanent, but they should be further reduced, particularly for small businesses.

In an exclusive interview with Texas Politics, Rep. Luttrell discussed the Trump-era tax cuts, praising them for bolstering the economy. Despite critics arguing that the cuts have long-term impact on the national debt.

Rep. Luttrell emphasized the benefits of making the cuts permanent, saying that it would be “amazing” for small businesses.

“I know the American public would love that,” he said. “The existing tax cuts are great,” he expressed, adding that “if the Republican Party can come to some sort of consensus on ‘hey, let’s go long on this,’ then we have to get the Senate to back it up.”

However, the national debt remains an important issue for Republicans. One area where Rep. Luttrell believes that the country could make great strides in to address the national debt is through energy independence.

“Make America Energy Independent Again and have everybody come to us, so we can increase the exports,” he argued, affirming that energy independence would strengthen the economy.

“It helps the economy, and that’s the way we can start chippin’ away at the debt,” Rep. Luttrell addressed.

Through ramping up natural gas and oil experts, he argued, the United States could reinvigorate its industrial base and create a sustainable path toward fiscal stability.

“If we are the exporting company of natural gas and oil amongst all of the other commodities that we have, we can build the United States, bring our industrial infrastructure back, and that’s a win/win for us,” he explained.

Because of this, he wholeheartedly backs President Donald Trump (R) when he says “drill, baby, drill.”
