Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) delivered his 2025 State of the State address over the weekend, touting Texas’ economic dominance and outlining key legislative priorities like property tax relief, school choice, and teacher pay raises.

The governor, who’s focused on presenting Texas as a shining example for the state called “the most powerful economy in America.” “Ranked as the best state for doing business for 20 years, Texas is number one for the most new jobs, number one for economic development, and number one as the best state to start a new business,” he added during his address.

Governor Abbott framed Texas as a model for the rest of the country, emphasizing its economic success and conservative policies. “Texas is the blueprint for America’s future,” he championed, reinforcing his vision of the state as a national leader.

However, Abbott acknowledged that Texans are undergoing a financial strain, particularly when it comes to rising property taxes. “We know that many Texans face an affordability crisis. Last session, we slashed your property taxes. But for many Texans, those cuts were wiped out by local taxing authorities that hiked your property taxes even more. That must end this session,” he affirmed, calling for further action to prevent local governments from undercutting tax relief efforts.

Education reform, a hot-button topic in the state, was another focal point of Abbott’s address. He pushed for expanding school choice and increasing teacher pay.

“Government-mandated schools cannot meet the unique needs of every student. But Texas can provide families with choices to meet those needs,” he said in his address, reiterating his support for a voucher-like program that allows parents to use state funds for private school tuition.

The governor also addressed the importance of supporting teachers, promising salary increases and incentives for top-performing educators. “We must fund and train the best teachers. That starts with giving our teachers a pay raise this session,” he said.

“Additionally, we must reward the best teachers by putting them on a path to earn a six-figure salary.”

With the legislative session underway, Governor Abbott’s proposals are expected to be key points of debate among lawmakers.
