Just days after being confirmed as the next Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Secretary Scott Turner (R) has announced the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) task force. The task force will be dedicated to uncovering waste, fraud, and abuse within HUD.
The launch of the task force comes as the Trump Administration hones in on government spending.
Recent reports indicated that the Trump Administration had asked HUD employees to justify hundreds of contracts. The increased oversight has raised concerns among HUD staff that the administration could pursue significant budget cuts, as President Donald Trump (R) previously proposed during his first term in office.
In his announcement, Secretary Turner emphasized that the DOGE task force would ensure responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars, saying “I’m happy to announce the DOGE task force here at HUD. We will be very detailed and deliberate about every dollar spent.”

“With President Trump’s leadership, business as usual, the status quo, is no longer the posture that we will take, and with the help of DOGE, we will identify and eliminate all waste, fraud, and abuse. We’ve already identified 260 million dollars in savings and still have much more to accomplish,” he added.
The $260 million in identified savings represents just the beginning of what the administration sees as a larger effort to streamline federal agencies and ensure that taxpayer money is allocated efficiently. President Trump’s focus on reducing government waste has been a key theme of his administration, and the formation of the DOGE task force signals a renewed commitment to financial accountability within HUD.
Though Republicans have praised the president over his focus on trimming government "fat," Democrats have rebuked the efforts, calling it government overreach.
Before his confirmation, Secretary Turner, who formerly served in the Texas House, shared his concerns over HUD, warning that it was failing to meet the needs of a dire housing market.
