State Senator Adam Hinojosa (R) convened a historic meeting of Coastal Bend leaders this week, bringing together key stakeholders to address regional water and economic development challenges. The meeting, which included officials from San Patricio County, Nueces County, Corpus Christi, Portland, and Port Aransas, as well as representatives from the Port of Corpus Christi and the Nueces River Authority, is a significant step in strengthening regional partnerships.
The discussion centered on advancing a regional water strategy and ensuring fair representation for San Patricio County on the Port of Corpus Christi Commission. Despite its growing economic role, San Patricio County currently holds only one seat on the commission. State Senator Hinojosa stressed the need to expand its representation, ensuring balanced decision-making for the entire region.
“This Coastal Bend Water Alliance is something we have been advocating for decades,” said San Patricio County Commissioner Thomas Yardley, praising state Senator Hinojosa’s leadership.

A major highlight of the meeting was the discussion of two key desalination projects—one at the Inner Harbor and another at Harbor Island. These projects aim to provide sustainable water resources for local communities and industrial growth. Drew Molly, COO of Corpus Christi Water, emphasized the urgency of advancing these efforts. “We are at a critical juncture. This project has taken a long time, and we must look out for our ratepayers.”
State Senator Hinojosa further stressed the importance of collaboration in ensuring long-term regional prosperity. Leaders from the Nueces River Authority reaffirmed their commitment to cooperation, highlighting that they were not in competition with Corpus Christi but instead working toward shared goals.
Attendees praised State Senator Hinojosa for fostering unity among stakeholders. Portland Mayor Cathy Skurow praised his leadership in forging regional cooperation, while Port Aransas Mayor Wendy Moore lauded the senator for creating an alliance to prepare for future challenges. Nueces County Judge Connie Scott and Corpus Christi Mayor Paulette Guajardo echoed the sentiment, acknowledging the senator’s role in setting the stage for future collaboration.
