Roy Fuels Growing Support of DOGE's Oversight Efforts of Entire Federal Government

In a recent interview with Texas Politics, Representative Chip Roy (R-TX) stressed the need for enhanced oversight of federal agencies, particularly the Department of Defense (DOD). He argued that the growing bureaucracy within the federal government demands more scrutiny and called for the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to play a larger role in monitoring agencies like the Defense Department.

“All of that needs to be overseen, it needs more review,” Rep. Roy said, referring to all of the federal agencies. “DOGE is doing a lot of the work we should be doing, and we need to improve how we do it. But Congress has been outmanned and outgunned by the bureaucracy for a long time.”

Rep. Roy stressed the importance of real-time monitoring of government spending, especially regarding contracts, to prevent inefficiency and favoritism. He called for Congress to have more tools to oversee and track contracts, something he believes DOGE could help with, to ensure taxpayer dollars are being spent appropriately.

“We need more tools for oversight,” Roy added. “Frankly, we need some of DOGE’s tools to monitor contracts in real-time.”

Rep. Chip Roy also pointed out the bureaucratic nature of the Pentagon, calling for reforms similar to those needed in other federal agencies. He argued that the DOD, like other agencies, requires a closer look and needs to be reformed to eliminate inefficiencies.

“Pentagon needs reform like every other agency,” said Roy “I view it equally as bureaucratic if not more than every other agency, so reform it all.”

The Texas congressman’s comments reflect broader concerns voiced by other lawmakers, including Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) and Rep. Scott Franklin (R-FL). Both have raised similar concerns about inefficiencies and waste within the DOD, with Rep. Mills highlighting the department’s failure to pass its internal audits for the past four years.

“what we cannot ignore is that the DOD has failed their own internal audits for the last four times," Rep. Mills remarked, emphasizing the need for better oversight.

Rep. Franklin also voiced concern over waste in military budgets, stating that it is not a year-to-year process, but that military budgets go by quarter.

“It's not just a year-to-year process, but military budgets by quarter. And if you don't spend your money, a lot of money in a quarter, in many cases, you're not even allowed to carry it over to the following quarter." said Franklin.

Together, the lawmakers are advocating for reforms that would enhance oversight of federal agencies and contracts to prevent favoritism and ensure that taxpayer money is being spent effectively and responsibly.
