Beto O'Rourke Says Senator Schumer Should 'Step Aside'

During a rally in Fort Bend County alongside Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz (R), Former Texas Congressman Beto O’Rourke (D) made it clear that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D) has overstayed his welcome as a leader in the Democratic Party. Who should lead Democrats in the Senate in lieu of Senate Minority Leader Schumer? Who knows. In a time of structural reconfiguration and rebranding, Democrats are looking for new leadership and brighter electoral pathways.

“No more playing nice. In my opinion – just mine alone – Chuck Schumer needs to step aside,” the former Congressman said during the town hall event, and the crowd immediately cheered at the suggestion.

Rep. O’Rourke has run for every political office imaginable, but every campaign has come up short. However, the Texas Democrat has been making the rounds as the 2026 midterm election draws near, and he could be eyeing a more prominent role in the Democrat Party.

The congressional town hall this week was hosted by Powered by the People, a grassroots organization that was founded by the former congressman in 2019.

One example of Rep. O’Rourke’s involvement in the upcoming election is his recent support of congressional hopeful Christian Menefee, who’s running to replace the late Rep. Sylvester Turner (D).

Texas Senator John Cornyn (R), who launched his re-election campaign this week, is facing Republican opposition in Attorney General Ken Paxton (R). Former Texas Rep. Colin Allred (D) is another challenger whose name has floated as a possible candidate after losing to Senator Ted Cruz (R) in 2024.

Could Rep. O'Rourke be signaling a possible senate run?

The last time Rep. O'Rourke ran for office was in 2022 when he faced incumbent Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R). The election didn't go in his favor, but dissatisfaction with the current administration and Republican leadership could prove beneficial for the former congressman.
