Texas Rep. August Pfluger (R), the Chairman of the Republican Study Committee (RSC), has introduced two bills as part of the RSC’s “Enforcing Maximum Pressure” initiative, aimed at further isolating the Iranian regime.
During a press conference announcing the legislation, Rep. Pfluger emphasized the need to maximize pressure on Iran, commenting that “President Trump has not just earned our gratitude, he deserves unwavering support as he revives the maximum pressure campaign against Iran's leaders—the world's most dangerous state sponsors of terrorism.”
“The Iranian regime is not just a threat; its leaders are a genocidal death cult. Make no mistake about their strategy—they view Israel's destruction as the beginning of their evil plans,” Rep. Pfluger added.
The first bill, the No Iranian Energy Act, sanctions the importation of Iranian natural gas to Iraq, cutting off a major financial stream for Tehran. Iranian gas imports currently contribute roughly 8.8 GW of Iraq’s power generation. With the expiration of a sanctions waiver for electricity transmission from Iran, additional action is necessary to block this revenue source.
The second bill, the Iran Waiver Recissions Act, permanently freezes all Iranian-sanctioned assets and prohibits the President from lifting sanctions through waivers, licenses, or guidance. This legislation passed the House last session with bipartisan support (259-160) and seeks to prevent any future administration from easing restrictions on Tehran.
Rep. Pfluger’s bills are part of a larger Republican-led package of Iran sanctions legislation, considered the toughest Iran sanctions package ever proposed by Congress.
Nine other House Republicans and RSC members introduced similar bills to codify President Donald Trump’s (R) maximum pressure campaign.
