A new Washington Post poll reveals that a majority of Americans support the mass deportation of undocumented immigrants, marking a sharp increase in support for the Trump Administration’s immigration policies. According to the poll, 56% of Americans agree with the deportations, and 43% oppose them. In 2016, only 38% of respondents supported similar measures.
The poll’s findings have ignited political reactions, particularly among Republican lawmakers who see the results as a public endorsement of stricter immigration enforcement.
“This poll has to be devastating to Sen. Hollen and other DeMS-13 members,” wrote Texas Rep. Keith Self (R) in a post on X. “Americans overwhelmingly support the enforcement of U.S. immigration law.”

The timing of the poll comes amid controversy over a Democratic delegation’s recent trip to El Salvador. The group traveled to advocate for Kilmar Abrego-Garcia, a Maryland resident recently deported under the Alien Enemies Act.
U.S. immigration authorities have accused Abrego-Garcia of having ties to MS-13, which is a claim that his supporters reject. Despite the allegations, several Democratic lawmakers are pushing for his return to the U.S., citing violations of due process and humanitarian concerns.
The delegation that traveled to El Salvador included Arizona Rep. Yassamin Ansari (D), Oregon Rep. Maxine Dexter (D), Florida Rep. Maxwell Frost (D), and California Rep. Robert Garcia (D). The visit comes after Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen (D) visited Abrego-Garcia last week.
The delegation plans to meet with officials at the US embassy this week to advocate for Abrego-Garcia, calling for his release and asking about other individuals who have been transferred from the US and who are currently detained in El Salvador.
