A new University of Texas/Texas Politics Project Poll shows that support for President Donald Trump (R) and Republicans has declined in Texas.

President Trump’s approval rating in Texas has fallen into net-negative territory for the first time in his second term. The president’s support shows 44% approving and 51% disapproving of his job performance. The poll also highlights declining approval for Texas leadership, including Governor Greg Abbott (R) and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick (R).

As Texans struggle with economic hardship and political infighting over marijuana regulation, the tension has affected Republican approval. Governor Abbott’s approval dipped to 41% (from 44% in April), and disapproval rose to 44%. Lt. Governor Patrick saw a more significant drop, with only 30% approving and 42% disapproving, which is down from an even 36% split in the spring.

At the center of the controversy is Senate Bill 3, the Legislature’s attempt to ban hemp-derived THC products.

Governor Abbott vetoed the bill, citing constitutional concerns and instead called a special session on July 21st to pursue stricter regulation. The decision sparked public disagreement with Lt. Gov. Patrick, who called the veto a betrayal of law enforcement and families that have been harmed by high-potency products.

During a press conference, Lt. Governor Patrick warned against Governor Abbott's decision to veto the bill. “The governor of the state of Texas wants to legalize recreational marijuana in Texas," he said.

Texans appear to support the governor’s regulatory approach. 53% of voters opposed the THC ban passed by the Legislature, compared to 31% in support. Republicans however remain divided, with 46% supporting and 39% opposing the ban. Strong opposition came from Democrats (68%) and independents (58%).

Support for expanding medical marijuana access also remains high, with 54% of voters in favor, including 59% of Republicans.

The poll, which was conducted between June 6th and the 16th  with 1,200 registered voters, suggests that President Trump, Governor Abbott, and Lt. Governor Patrick are all facing heightened scrutiny heading into a contentious 2026 election cycle.
