WASHINGTON—Representative Brian Babin (R-TX) defended President Donald Trump (R) amid renewed impeachment efforts led by fellow Texan Rep. Al Green (D). The latest resolution, introduced by Green, accuses Trump of violating the constitution’s war powers clause.

Speaking to Texas Politics Rep. Babin dismissed the effort outright. “Crazy, crazy — the man is keeping us safe,” Rep. Babin said. “He is securing our borders, he has eliminated the nuclear threat of Iran, who has basically declared war on us 40 years ago.”

Rep. Babin concluded his remarks with a note of gratitude, expressing thanks that Donald Trump is in office, "Thank God for President Trump.”

Rep. Green’s resolution, H.Res. 537, outlines allegations that Trump has failed to “seek prior congressionally mandated authorization for the use of military force.” and has used presidential powers in a manner that undermines constitutional governance. This comes after the military strike on Iran's nuclear facilities conducted by President Trump.

While the resolution has some support among House Democrats, a large number have urged caution. In a recent procedural vote, 128 Democrats voted to halt the impeachment process, including Texas Reps. Henry Cuellar, Lizzie Fletcher, Vicente Gonzalez, Eddie Bernice Johnson, and Marc Veasey.

This split underscores ongoing tension within the Democratic caucus over how to respond to Trump’s second term in office. Green, who has introduced multiple impeachment resolutions during and after Trump’s first term, maintains that impeachment is a necessary response to what he views as a breakdown of democratic norms.

Democratic leadership has not committed to advancing the resolution, and its path forward remains uncertain.
