State Sen. Angela Paxton (R) has filed for divorce from her husband, Attorney General Ken Paxton (R), citing “biblical grounds.”

The Texas Republican announced the divorce on social media.

“I believe marriage is a sacred covenant and I have earnestly pursued reconciliation,” state Senator Paxton wrote on X. “But in light of recent discoveries, I do not believe that it honors God or is loving to myself, my children, or Ken to remain in the marriage. I move forward with complete confidence that God is always working everything together for the good of those who love Him and who are called according to His purpose.”

Attorney General Paxton, who is running for the U.S. Senate against Senator John Cornyn (R), also shared a post on X, commenting on the divorce.

“After facing the pressures of countless political attacks and public scrutiny, Angela and I have decided to start a new chapter in our lives,” the Attorney General wrote. “I could not be any more proud or grateful for the incredible family that God has blessed us with, and I remain committed to supporting our amazing children and grandchildren,” he added, calling on his followers for “prayers and privacy.”

The attorney general has faced years of controversy, including allegations of infidelity and corruption. During his 2023 impeachment trial, witnesses accused Paxton of using his office to benefit a political donor and secure employment for a woman with whom he was allegedly having an affair. He was ultimately acquitted.

Polls indicate that Attorney General Paxton is leading in the senate race, which has led to speculation that Senator Cornyn could drop out.

The attorney general has not issued a comment on the "discoveries" that state Senator Paxton made reference to in her social media post, and Senator Cornyn's campaign also hasn't commented on the announcement.
