Governor Greg Abbott (R) has released his agenda for the upcoming Special Session on July 21st, and Texas Democrats are not happy. In response to the agenda, the Texas Democratic Party has released a statement, condemning the governor's priorities.
In the statement, the Texas Democratic Party accuse Governor Abbott of using flood relief efforts as political cover for a coordinated redistricting push aimed at shielding Republican losses.
“While this special session call includes disaster relief and preparedness in response to the recent Hill Country floods,” the statement begins, “it is important to note that the governor already has the full authority to grant flood relief within his emergency powers, meaning that he disgustingly placed this on the agenda to hide his true intentions for this session.”
Texas Democrats argue that tying flood recovery to legislative action may delay aid to communities already devastated by severe flooding across South-Central Texas, calling it “political gamesmanship” that puts lives at risk.
Behind the scenes, the party alleges, lies a redistricting scheme “at Donald Trump’s behest” to redraw Democratic-leaning congressional districts, noting TX-09, TX-18, TX-29, and TX-33.
These districts, which are all currently represented by Democrats, were originally created by Republican-led legislatures but are now targets of a GOP “power grab aimed at undermining voters who do not align with their ideology.”
Texas Democrats argue the redistricting move is designed to shield Republicans from electoral consequences tied to President Donald Trump’s (R) unpopularity and broader dissatisfaction with the state’s rightward trajectory.
“This session will be costly to Texas taxpayers and appears to serve Republican special interests rather than Texans,” the party said, emphasizing that leadership should “be laser-focused on flood relief and prevention.”
Declaring their commitment to “supporting our Texas Democratic officials who are serving the people of Texas,” the statement concludes with a warning against “authoritarian interests in Washington, D.C.” that the party believes are manipulating state politics for national gain.
