Former Texas Governor Rick Perry (R) has published an op-ed announcing his endorsement of Senator John Cornyn (R).
In the Houston Chronicle op-ed, Governor Perry calls Senator Cornyn “a steadfast defender of Texas, a principled conservative and a leader who gets results.” Governor Perry, who served as governor for 15 years, emphasized that “John isn’t simply one senator out of 100” and that Senator Cornyn understands Texas’ “values – freedom, faith, and hard work.”
Governor Perry cited Senator Cornyn’s extensive resume, extending from Houston to San Antonio, through offices like a district judge, Texas Supreme Court justice and Texas attorney general, to his current role as a Senator for Texas. This, Governor Perry argues, is proof of Senator Cornyn’s commitment to the country.
“When it comes to results, John Cornyn delivers,” the former governor wrote, praising Senator Cornyn’s leadership when it comes to keeping taxes low, cutting red tape, and protecting Texas’ energy dominance in oil, gas, wind, and solar.
Governor Perry also highlighted Senator Cornyn’s work on establishing stronger border security, praising the Texas senator for “fighting for a border wall, more agents and cutting-edge surveillance,” including that Senator Cornyn delivered “$11 billion in federal funding to reimburse Texas for years of doing the federal government’s job.”
Senator Cornyn faces a challenger in Attorney General Ken Paxton (R), who had led in the polls since announcing his candidacy but has since been plagued with controversies surrounding his actions while in office and alleged infidelity. In response to the attorney general's divorce announcement, the Cornyn Campaign released a website detailing an alleged pseudonym Attorney General Paxton was using.
Governor Perry assessed that Senator Cornyn “embodies the old saying, ‘Speak softly and carry a big stick.’” He noted, “he’s voted with president Trump 99.2% of the time” and is consistently ranked among the most effective U.S. senators.
