Former President Barack Obama (D) joined a virtual call with Texas House Democrats who remain out of state in protest of Republican-led redistricting efforts. The lawmakers left Texas to deny the state House a quorum, aiming to stall passage of a congressional map that could boost GOP seats ahead of the 2026 elections.
Former Attorney General Eric Holder, chair of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), joined Obama on the call. According to a spokesperson, Obama praised the Democrats for resisting what he called “an even more egregious gerrymander” and emphasized that their protest is part of a broader push to protect free and fair elections nationwide.
“He made clear that they are part of a bigger effort to protect free and fair elections and commended them for inspiring others with their actions,” the spokesperson said.
Texas House Democratic Caucus Chair Gene Wu posted about the meeting on X, thanking Obama for his support. “We are encouraged by your words and remain committed to fighting for democracy, in Texas & across the country,” Wu wrote.
The Democrats’ protest comes in response to a proposed redistricting map that would likely give Republicans five additional congressional seats. The lawmakers have been out of the state for nearly a week to block the measure, which requires a quorum to pass.
Obama will headline an NDRC fundraiser next week, reinforcing the national attention the Texas standoff has drawn.
