Texas Democrats Set Conditions for Return Amid Redistricting Battle

Texas House Democrats, who fled the state to block Republican-led redistricting efforts, announced they will only return under two specific conditions.

First, they demand that the House adjourn its special session on Friday, as previously stated by GOP House Speaker Dustin Burrows.

Second, they are calling for the introduction of California-style redistricting maps, which they argue would counter what they call the “Trump-Abbott voter suppression effort.”

Democrats left Texas to deny a quorum, halting the advancement of new congressional maps that could give Republicans as many as five new seats in 2026. Governor Greg Abbott (R) has already signaled he will call another special session if this one ends without a vote.

"If you don't show up to do your job, you lose your job. Same thing should happen for the derelict Democrats,” said Greg Abbott.

Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick (R) also weighed in, The Texas Senate will continue passing this map each legislative session to accurately reflect our state until House Democrats return from their 'vacation' and get back to work for the people of Texas.”

Gene Wu, Chair of the Texas House Democratic Caucus, said that Democrats have endured significant threats and retaliation since breaking quorum, including bomb threats and legal intimidation.

“We have stood firm in our fight against a proposed Jim Crow congressional district map,” Wu said. “Now, as Democrats across the nation join our fight to cause these maps to fail their political purpose, we're prepared to bring this battle back to Texas under the right conditions and to take this fight to the courts.”

The redistricting battle has drawn national attention, with California Governor Gavin Newsom urging his state to consider mid-cycle redistricting reforms to counterbalance Republican gains.
