The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has introduced a redesigned Texas driver license (DL) and identification (ID) card. All newly issued cards will now feature updated security enhancements aimed at combating fraud and protecting Texans from identity theft. Existing licenses and IDs with the older design will remain valid until their expiration date.
DPS Driver License Division Chief Sheri Gipson emphasized the importance of secure identification.
“The way driver licenses are made can make a big difference in terms of public safety,” she said. “This new card design will make it even more difficult for criminals to produce counterfeit cards, and it enhances ways we can protect Texans’ identities from being stolen.”
The redesigned cards are made from polycarbonate, a tamper-resistant material that is both durable and difficult to forge. The format meets the latest standards set by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA). One key visual change is the replacement of the traditional gold star with a black, laser-engraved star in the top right corner, signifying compliance with federal REAL ID requirements.
In addition to new materials and compliance updates, the layout of the card has been reorganized to present personal information in a clearer, more readable format. DPS says the changes are intended to improve both security and ease of use during identification and verification processes.
Texans receiving a new or renewed license or ID will automatically receive the updated design.
