U.S. Senator Cruz (R) recently traveled to Panama to emphasize the Panama Canal's vital role in U.S national and economic security.
Sen. Cruz is chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, which holds primary jurisdiction over the canal due to its central function in global trade and American commerce.
During the visit, Cruz met with top Panamanian officials, including Economy and Finance Minister Filipe Chapman, Public Security Minister Frank Abrego, and Panama Canal Authority Administrator Ricaurte Vásquez Morales.
The Texas senator raised concerns over China's growing presence and influence in Panama, warning it could be a threat to both American and Panamanian Interests.
"There is undoubtedly a strong Chinese presence, and I believe a threat to the canal," Cruz warned. "The purpose of my visit is to strengthen the longtime friendship between the U.S. and Panama and to underscore the canal's importance to our national security."
Previously, Cruz has led Senate hearings to examine challenges facing the Panama Canal. These issues included capacity issues, rising transit fees, and China's expanding influence in the region. Lawmakers have raised alarms over Beijing's control of important infrastructure near the canal and efforts to bypass U.S. Sanctions.
China's influence introduces possible risks to the integrity of the U.S.-Panama Neutrality Treaty, which Sen. Cruz noted in his comments.
"China is not America's friend, and China is not Panama's friend, and if God forbid, a military conflict emerges between the United States and China, I believe there is an unacceptable risk that China would act to shut down the Panama Canal, which would have a devastating impact on the United States and an even worse impact on Panama," Cruz warned.
He emphasized the need for stronger U.S. investment in canal infrastructure, including expanded port facilities and water supply projects. He claims these investments will ensure the canal continues to operate at full capacity and remain secure from foreign adversaries.
