Rep. Pete Sessions
WASHINGTON- U.S. Representative Pete Sessions (R) recently expressed support for Israel's ongoing military operations in Gaza during an interview with Texas Politics. He framed the incursion as a necessary step to prevent further attacks following the October 7, 2023, assault.
"This battle that is going on there was almost entirely because of the way the view was that they could come across as this 'music festival' and kill people with impunity," said Sessions.
He referenced the Hamas-led attack that left more than 1,200 Israelis dead, and led to the capture of hostages.
"Their desire to hold hostages, their desire not to negotiate, even their own people were suffering," Sessions added. "I think it shows incredible wisdom by the Israelis to keep moving forward, or it will happen again."
He emphasized that Israel perceives nearly all threats as existential, noting that the government views both attacks and negotiations with deep suspicion.
"What the Israelis know as much as anybody is, even the people at the table that are trying to negotiate the peace are terrorists. Thats what they don't like," he said.
While largly supportive of Israel's military campaign, Sessions acknowledged concerns about broader consequences.
"The incursion into Qatar, I understand, I did not like it. I think the president said, 'We didn't green light that.' There are always boundaries that you've got to follow to make sure that public opinion is behind you," Sessions assessed.
Calling Israel's move "a big bold step," Sessions added that he remains "very sympathetic" to its security needs, stressing that deterrence is critical to preventing future attacks.
