U.S. Representative Chip Roy (R) is pressing AEP Transmission and CPS Energy for answers regarding the proposed Howard-Solstice Transmission Line Project, which could cut through parts of Texas Hill Country.
In a letter to AEP Transmission's Michael Harris, Roy highlighted community concerns over routes that would pass directly through Bandera and Real counties, regions known for their natural beauty and rural character.
"The delicate nature of the Hill Country in Texas requires careful stewardship and boasts one of the most beautiful areas in the nation," Roy wrote.
He emphasized that residents worry about the visual impacts and potential environmental harm.
Beyond environmental concerns, Roy stressed the potential economic consequences. The Texas Hill Country relies heavily on tourism, with visitors supporting local outfitters, lodging establishments, summer camps, and small businesses.
"Tourism is the lifeblood of the Hill Country economy," Roy expressed.
He warned that a large-scale transmission construction could disrupt the region's economic ecosystem.
The Howard-Solstice project aims to enhance grid reliability across Texas. Still, its proposed routes have drawn pushback from residents and lawmakers who fear long-term consequences for one of the state's most visited regions.
Roy has requested detailed answers from both utilities about their planning process, route considerations, and how they intend to address community concerns.
