U.S. Senators Ted Cruz (R) and John Cornyn (R) have forcefully responded to the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey, following years of controversy surrounding the FBI's handling of politically sensitive investigations.
Comey was charged with making false statements to Congress and obstruction of a congressional proceeding, stemming from conflicting testimony related to a 2016 leak authorized by then-Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe.
Cruz, who has long criticized Comey's role in the FBI's handling of the Clinton email investigation and Trump-Russia probe, said the contradictions between Comey and McCabe's testimony warrant legal consequences.
"Comey and McCabe's statements are irreconcilably contradictory," Cruz wrote on X.. "One of them lied to Congress, and there must be accountability."
Cruz further discussed the situation on The Mark Levin Show, calling the indictment a long-overdue step in restoring integrity to federal law enforcement. He accused Comey of using his position at the FBI to pursue partisan goals.
"Jim Comey demonstrated complete arrogance and unwillingness to comply with the law," said Cruz. "He abused the power of the FBI to target and persecute Donald Trump."
Cornyn issued a public statement, emphasizing the seriousness of the charges, especially given Comey's former position at the head of the nation's top law enforcement agency.
"While our legal system provides for the presumption of innocence, Comey's accountability for FBI abuses during the first Trump term is long overdue," Cornyn stated. "There must be consequences for any crimes."
The reactions from Cruz and Cornyn reflect a broader demand from republican lawmakers for accountability over what they see as political bias and misconduct within federal agencies.
