Several Texas lawmakers have signed on to a congressional letter urging President Trump (R) and Secretary of State Marco Rubio to formally recognize a Palestinian state. This follows recent moves by France, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia at the United Nations General Assembly.

Led by U.S. Representative Ro Khanna (D-CA), the letter gathered 47 signatories, including Texas representatives Greg Casar (D), Joaquin Castro (D), Sylvia Garcia (D), Veronica Escobar (D), and Al Green (D).

The members stressed that U.S. recognition would align the country with much of the international community and help advance a sustainable resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"More than 150 countries recognize Palestinian Statehood. This is a Moral issue," Khanna said. "We cannot be isolated from the rest of the free world."

The Lawmakers argue that recognition would affirm Palestinian rights, strengthen prospects for long-term peace, and encourage reforms within Palestinian governance while ensuring Israel's security.

"We believe recognizing Palestinian statehood and obligating Palestinian leaders to abide by the international law binding states and their governments will make that far more achievable and sustainable than decades of statelessness and repression have," the letter affirms.

The letter emphasizes that the Hamas-led October 7 attacks and the war that followed underscore the urgent need to address the underlying conflict. It calls for a ceasefire, release of hostages, humanitarian aid to Gaza, and a political framework that balances Palestinian self-determination with Israel's security.

With five Texas Democrats among the signatories, the state's delegation played a notable role in highlighting a shift within parts of Congress toward supporting Palestinian statehood.
