Representative August Pfluger (R), joined by George Whitesides (D-CA), has introduced the LAUNCH Act. The bipartisan legislation aims to streamline commercial space launch regulations, thereby maintaining U.S. leadership in the rapidly evolving space domain.

The bill seeks to codify regulatory reforms initiated during the Trump administration, which aimed to reduce bureaucratic barriers to innovation in the commercial space sector.

The LAUNCH Act would modernize outdated launch and reentry rules, improve interagency coordination, and provide support to critical spaceports such as Midland Spaceport in Texas.

"Space exploration and dominance are vital to America's long-term strength and security," Rep. Pfluger said in a statement. "As Adversaries like China seek to weaponize and exploit the space domain... we must implement long-overdue regulatory reforms that keep the United States at the forefront."

Rep. Whitesides, a former NASA official and commercial space executive, echoed that sentiment.

"I've seen firsthand how outdated and duplicative regulations can slow down American innovation," said Whitesides. "The LAUNCH Act will cut red tape and make it easier for U.S. companies... to compete and lead in the global space economy."

The bill has received support from industry stakeholders, including the Commercial Space Federation and Midland Spaceport. Dave Cavossa, CSF President, praised the bill for helping ensure "red tape doesn't stand in the way of national priorities like returning to the Moon and winning the next space race."

A companion bill was introduced earlier this year in the Senate by a bipartisan group including Senators John Cornyn (R-TX), Ben Ray Lujan (D-NM), Rick Scott (R-FL), and Mark Kelly (D-AZ)
