U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R) addressed the recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Facility shooting that occurred in Dallas, Texas, calling it a troubling rise in political violence.
Cornyn noted that this is the fourth attack against immigration officials in Texas in recent Months.
”We’re beginning to see, in our country, a level of political violence that is not and should not ever be considered normal,” Cornyn argued.
He connected the incident to what he described as an increasing hostility toward law enforcement, accusing Democrats of fueling division rather than working toward solutions.
He further blamed Democratic Leadership, specifically Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), for allegedly choosing partisanship over compromise as Congress faces another potential government shutdown.
“[Schumer would] rather shut down the government than work across the aisle for the benefit of the American people,” Cornyn commented, warning that that a failure to negotiate would be remembered as the “Schumer Shutdown.”
Cornyn concluded by suggesting that Democrats’ approach may have future political consequences in future elections, just as he believes it impacted the 2024 election.
In response to the political tension, Cornyn urged bipartisan cooperation to prevent both government disruption and further political violence.
The 29-year-old Texas man who committed the attack was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Vice President JD Vance (R) provided an update on the investigation, noting that evidence that was "not yet public" proved that the assailant was "politically motivated."
