Governor Greg Abbott has issued a directive to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), instructing the agency to ensure that all counties and cities across Texas comply strictly with federal and state roadway safety guidelines.
This directive aims to remove the non-standard markings, signage, and symbols that convey political or ideological messages.
In a statement, Abbott emphasized the importance of maintaining neutrality and safety on Texas roadways.
"Texans expect their taxpayer dollars to be used wisely, not advance political agendas on Texas roadways," said Abbott. "To keep Texans moving safely and free from distraction, we must maintain a safe and consistent transportation network across Texas."
The directive calls for immediate review and enforcement actions to eliminate any unauthorized roadway markings or signs that deviate from official traffic control purposes.
According to both federal and state regulations, surface markings or displays that are not directly related to traffic control or safety are not prohibited, which includes social or political symbols.
Abbott warned that cities or counties failing to comply with these regulations could face significant consequences, including the loss of state or federal transportation funding.
This move is seen as a part of an effort by the state to ensure consistency and safety across Texas's transportation infrastructure, and to avoid the use of public spaces for political messaging.
